Thoughts from visiting Disney – 1: Vacation

Recently I went with my family to Florida to visit the famed Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and the Kennedy Space Center. We have not gone on vacation in the past several years and wanted to take a break. What is a vacation anyway? It is taking time off from routine work to do something else – see places, visit friends, do gardening, visit Mayapur and so on.

But is the life of a devotee routine for one to get away from it? Of course, many devotees nowadays work at regular jobs and are not full time temple devotees. So they may wish to take a break from their work and go out with family. But where do they go? Usually to Japa workshops, Festivals of Inspiration, Mayapur and Vrndavana Festivals and so on. And some do go to places like Disney world, Grand Canyon, Taj Mahal etc.

Now the break or the vacation is from the routine work of going to office daily. But for a devotee his devotional service to Krishna in the form of chanting, hearing, reading, associating with devotees and so on should never become a dreaded routine. We do lots of things repeatedly – like chanting certain number of rounds, offering arati to the Deity and other things, which when not careful have a tendency to become ritualistic. Devotional service is the yoga of love – connecting to the Supreme in love. And love should never become ritual like. Of course, at the beginning of bhakti yoga we are on the platform of sädhana bhakti – bhakti in practice. So it could tend to become mundane at times but being conscious of the goal of loving Krsna, we should always fight that tendency.

So how to take a vacation without taking a vacation from bhakti? Of course, visiting Mayapur or japa workshops are to increase and improve our practices of bhakti. But visiting other places, we have the simple method given to us by Srila Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya – to chant the holy names. We can always stay connected to Krsna by chanting anywhere and everywhere. This is what I did early in the mornings before we left for the theme parks. And once inside, when waiting in lines for many of the attractions, I chanted verses from the scriptures in my mind. I also thought about what it means to see Krsna as He explains in Bhagavad gita 10th chapter: Anything glorious or beautiful existence arises from a spark of His splendor.

Look for Krishna in whatever we do?

Hare Krishna
Yup, I think that's the key. We try and remember Krishna in whatever we do, including when we go on a holiday trip. I remember thinking of Krishna REALLY HARD when on the 'Mummy' rollercoaster ride at the Universal Studios.
:-D :-D
I'm going for a vacation after a week to a town in the Himalayas. I believe getting up early in the morning and chanting, surrounded by those magnificant mountain peaks is an experience worth having. I'm really looking forward to it!
Incidentally, are we doing something wrong when we go for a trip like this? After all, honestly speaking, we are indulging ourselves in material pleasures when on a holiday like this...

Devotional service

A devotee who is serious about Krsna consciousness always engages his time in doing some form of devotional service. I would say it is really a waste of time indulging in activities that have no bearing in Krsna consciousness. An advanced devotee wherever he goes will always remember Krishna but still he would not go on such trips. A neophyte devotee who wants to advance is better off not to do such things as it will be a distraction for his advancement.

The purpose of my writing this blog was to share my thoughts I had when I was visiting Disney world but certainly NOT to justify since I was thinking about Krsna it is ok to do such things. As Anthony has pointed out it is best to take vacations among devotees.

Hey devotees !

Now listen to this please

Disney or Vrndavan
you have no worries

Did Krshna dance with Mickey Mouse
Donald and Daisy ?

Did Pooh lead the Kirtan
with Piglet following lead ?

Did Krshna tickle the children
doing the bumper car rides ?

Did He whisper warnings in your ear
of roller-coaster n' water slide ?

Certainly , i would rather not go on a Disney Vacation
But sometimes you have to for loved ones, duty presides

Being a humble devotee you speak of
chanting in waiting lines
MahaMantra and Stotra
remembering the Divine

But the truth which you hide is that ....
YOU WENT ON A VACATION WITH KRSHNA !!
WHO IS NO OTHER THAN LOVE DIVINE ~ ~

My Humble Apologies...

Thank you Prabhuji
Please, please do not misunderstand; I was not trying to imply you were justifying your Disney trip.
Since I am to go for a holiday trip myself, I was in some doubt about whether I was doing something wrong. I spoke entirely for my own self. It goes absolutely without saying that advanced devotees like yourself would never think of indulging in non-Krishna Conscious activities.
Thank you for correcting me. Unfortunately, I am too attached to material enjoyment. That is why I'm looking forward to my vacation trip. I was trying to convince myself that I will utilize this trip to remember Krishna (chanting amidst the mountain view etc).
You are right. The bottom line is, any activity not concerned with Krishna Conciousness is not worth indulging in. I stand corrected.
Please accept my humble obeisances and please, please forgive me for any impertinence I may have shown.
Your eternal servant,
eternal muser

Haribol

Eternalmuser, I never for a moment thought that you were insulting me or anything like that. Please forgive me for giving such an impression. And I am not an advanced devotee as anybody who knows me or reads me will know.

I think Eternal Muser has it

"Whatever you do — do that... ...as an offering to Me." BG 9.27

it is the duty of everyone to mold his life in such a way that he will not forget Kṛṣṇa in any circumstance. [SP Purport] : )

Recently

Someone I know took leave this year and the place they went was subject to a cyclone, the town was flooded and then disease broke out by mosquito borne parasites then the stinging jellyfish filled the water at the beach. What a holiday!

I think it's good to take a break from your general routine. But like you I usually take the opportunity for more of the good stuff. Extra rounds, more reading and more remembering.

Great message Radhikesh.
