Complex Desire

Sometimes it's not so easy to sort out desires...
Krishna fulfills our desires, we know that.
So, we're desiring to become Krishna conscious.
However, we still have all sorts of material desires, along with that desire.
Krishna then gives us opportunities to make choices about these desires.
He puts us in a situation where we are forced to make a choice:
Are we going to use this situation to serve Him, love Him, become closer to Him..... or,
Are we going to use this situation to satisfy our material desires?
Which one is it? The choice is clearly ours, and we want both things since we are not Pure Devotees....
Of course we understand that it would be a much better idea to make the choice to Love Krishna, instead of loving ourselves and our senses.....
But it's not always so easy to make the right choice when we are presented with these types of tests, circumstances, choices, etc..
Any help, comments or discussion about this would be greatly appreciated...

Perfect way of pure devotional path

Hare Krishna dear mataji,
Thanks for your nice and quiet perfect answer,in very short time.
When a little child learn to step,he often falls.
His/her parents help him/her in this practise. In such a manner
Krishna also helps us to improve in krishna consciousness (when
we fall in test due to lack of much intelligence and effect of wrong use of free will) by any means. For ex.sometime he gives chnace to serve vaishnavas unwantedly, sometime he send devotees to our home.(As I hvae experienced)
As a child becomes perfect to walk at perticular stage, then his/her parents stop their efforts to help him walking.Krishna also helps us to reach at perticular level as per the will of perticular devotee.(as I understand )
Still there is point that at what stage we can realise that we are getting completly free from free will (of material desire ) which is the most important hurdle to reach on pure devotional path.
Rather than carring our efforts to reach at pure devotional path, surrendering unto lotus feet of Lord Krishna and depending on his will may be perfect way.And this might the perfect way to get rid off free material will.We also can achive the path by the blessings of pure devotees by serving them sincerly.
love,
sincere student,
Anil.

Devotees :)

Hare Krishna, Dear Anil,
I really like what you've said here about how Krishna gives us the opportunity to serve devotees.
That is just so important.
Krishna also gives us the opportunity to associate with devotees, it's a great blessing.
If we are given this great blessing we need to understand what a great blessing this is, as you do.
Sometimes, people don't realize how very fortunate they are to get a chance to associate with devotees, or to serve them, and then, they commit offenses, and they loose this opportunity.
Offenses to devotees of Krishna are very serious, and they are most serious when they are intentional.
Of course you already understand all of this very nicely, I am only just making this comment because your saying it has called my attention to this very important point.
Love,
Navasi

Why Krishna Put us in test?

Hare Krishna mataji,
As we know Lord krishna knows evrything. He knows even nature of every soul, whether somebody is promt or fraud in nature. In case a prompt person is trying to serve Krishna at his best level with all possible efforts, why Krishna put him on test also?

Navasi's picture

The Reason Why

Hare Krishna, Dear Anil Bobade,
This is a very nice question.
Actually it is Krishna's incredible mercy and kindness to us that He tests us.
If we are very sincere, then He will test us even more.
This is because our tests are opportunities for us to become more and more pure in our desire for Him,
To Love Him,
To Serve Him,
To Remember Him,
To Worship Him,
And Only Him.
If we are very sincere in our desire to do this, then He will test, test, test, to give us more chance for purification, more chance for surrender, more chance to want only Him, and nothing else.
So, this is a great blessing, to be tested by Krishna.
Krishna, Krishna, Krishna.
That's all we can think of when we are being tested.....
Unless we don't pass the test, then we fail, and that's what I was talking about here.... we get these tests, by Krishna's kind mercy to us, and we can either pass the test, by remembering and loving only Him, or we can fail the test, by taking shelter of our senses, our material desires, our false attempts at finding solutions, protections, and gratifications outside of Krishna, (that we think will make us feel better).....
It's up to us, Krishna gives us free will, otherwise, it would not be love, love.

Giving our desire to Krishna, Haribol!

Giving to Krishna is why we have come here to this planet earth. We are part of Krishna, yet not Krishna, we can only serve Krishna. Therefore we become Krishna Conscious in all our activities. The only way for this is to chant and affix the mind only and wholly and congruently all the time upon the movie of Krishna.

Once this is complete, our lives become wholly pure and want slips away and want only for the beautiful one known as hare krishna. Anyone can do this. Anyone can do this.

When well, this is our will. The reason why we come to sites as these is to serve krishna, if we do not serve krishna, we die and have another rebirth, think on this choice, as I shall too.

Haribol!

Hare Krishna!

G|ood Krishna blessing to the entire manifest.

Love Krishna!

Ps. Do it.

Why We Have Come Here

Hare Krishna, Dear Gary,
I'm confused by the first part of your comment, could you please explain what you are saying?
You said "giving to Krishna is why we have come here to this planet"....
The way I understand it is that we have come here to this planet because we did not want to give to Krishna.
We wanted to take, to be the one who was the "Lord" and the "Enjoyer" etc..
So, I don't understand what you are saying.
Thank you,
Love,
Navasi

Just Give to Krishna

Haribol!

Hare Krishna!

Blessing to Lord Chaitanya!

Focus on Krishna and you will find him. We are here on this planet yes due to sin, yet are we not also recitfy this sin while we are here. Simarly we, must give to Krishna. This is why we are here.

Giving To Krishna :)

Haribol!
Hare Krishna!
Now I understand what you meant....
You're saying that since we have already come here, then:
Now, (now that we are here),
Our purpose here on this planet (now) is to give to Krishna....
Is that right???
If that's what you are saying then I understand and agree with you completely ....
Thank you so much for explaining this to me. :)
I also like what you said in your previous comment "do it" :)
Hare Krishna,
Navasi

This Has Been Bugging Me, Too!

What a great post! It has a lot to do with my ideas about "surrender" ... on the one hand, I know what is right for me, but on the other hand I'm afraid to try to get it, heaven forbid I miss some material pleasure in the bargain! Sometimes I feel like a little kid who climbed too high up a tree, and can't get down, and no matter how many times the nice fireman on the ground says I'm safe to let go, (in my current situation, this would be Lord Krishna), I'm afraid to let go and fall. I think it really all comes down to focusing your consciousness on the Lord. Even knowing this is so, it's still hard to find a way to do so. Reading helps, chanting helps, knowing you're doing the right thing helps, even knowing your heart is in the right place (that's where I think I am), that can't hurt! There's a lot more to devotional service than meets the eye, especially to the rascal I'm starting to see withn myself!

Radhikesh's picture

Svabhava

This is a very nice post Dachsowned. We all think that we will miss out on some pleasure if we let go of our attachments, without realizing that what we are holding on to tightly is surely going to lead us to misery.
Now why despite so much knowledge that we are still struggling with desires? Krsna says it is due to our svabhava - our impressions, our proclivities that we gather and carry on from life to life. Krsna says even a jnanavan - a man with knowledge - is led by his svabhava, and so what can repression accomplish? This is exactly the state we are in.
We have knowledge but no practical wisdom but have desires that goes against what we know. We indulge our desires and then regret it. But again we indulge in the same desires and again regret it. So why do we do it again and again? Sukadeva Gosvami says that due to forgetfulness of our misery, in Bhagavatam.
Ok, theoretically these are all fine. But how do we practically do anything about it? Visvanatha Cakravarti says by association of devotees our impressions are broken, and we get pure bhakti to the Lord. So we need to be always in the physical association of devotees who can guide us and correct us.
For some of us this may not be practical to be amongst devotees. But if we really desire that we give up desires that go against Krsna, we should make all efforts to be among devotees. I know I am not doing it and thus always struggle with desires. But I understand the wisdom of these great souls

Impressions

Hare Krishna, Dear Radhikesh,
This is very interesting about the impressions and proclivities carried with us from previous lifetimes and how they are affecting our desires in this life ....
That's fascinating really....
I wanted to ask you something also,... what you're saying here about how if we don't have the association of devotees then we'll always be struggling with our desires...
That's difficult in practical application for a lot of us, as you've said.
I know I can't be in the association of devotees.... and I know that Dach can't be.... so are we hopeless then???
Or, do you think perhaps internet association through this Krishna.com "connect" website could perhaps be enough association to help us keep from becoming totally influenced by our desires?
I'd imagine there are lots of members of this website who don't have the association of devotees (in fact I am thinking of a few I know of right now, but I'm sure there are lots of others).
So, what do you think, Dear Radhikesh, is it enough?
Or are we lost and just going to continue to struggle endlessly anyway until we can somehow live closer to a temple and have direct contact and association then?
Thank you,
Love,
Navasi

Radhikesh's picture

Association

Haribol Navasi. Wouldn't it be wonderful if our desires are virtual and our association with devotees intimate? But for many of us, we dont have intimate association of devotees - like living close to a temple and serving there when we can. But we have our bodies and minds with us always - and thus desires are intimate with us always.

I have no right to say that you or the other devotees will be lost and continue to struggle endlessly. We need to make best use of what we have, and if all we can truly have is only virtual association, then that is good. It is much better than not communicating with devotees at all.

But since we are talking of desires here, more direct association of advanced devotees, who can compassionately understand us and correct and guide us, will be the best remedy. And I should be humble enough to serve them and be ready to be corrected by them.

Even Srila Prabhupada desired the direct association of his godbrothers, and not just thru letters. Unfortunately, they did not oblige and he had to preach alone. But while in India, he took great delight in associating with Sridhara Maharaja and other god brothers.

Virtual Desires

Dear Radhikesh Das,
Thank you so much for your comments on this, I appreciate that.
Yes,

Virtual Desires,
and
Intimate Association.

that would be ideal and really really wonderful :) :) :)
Too bad it's not possible.... :(
Nice concept though.

Tree Climbing :)

Hi Dach! Hare Krishna!
You know this is so funny, you just have me really laughing here with your example of the tree climbing and being stuck etc...
The reason is I feel exactly like that... and I think maybe you and I are becoming like our cats! lol :)
You know those kitties are always famous for getting stuck in trees also, and no matter how much you try to convince them that it's safe to come down, they won't do it!!! Stubborn little things.. lol
It was their idea to go up there in the first place!! :)
Then, they want you to come and "rescue" them, and they cry desperately to be rescued, but sure enough, when someone tries, even nice firemen, they will stay in that tree till they are pulled out, and even then, they'll be scratching and clawing at the hand that saves them! lol
So, this is a great example! We're in the "tree" of the material world, having gotten there by our own desire, and now, Krishna is trying to rescue us, because we're crying in distress from the suffering brought about by ourselves alone, and yet, all we do is fight Him every step of the way!!!
It's a fantastic example Dach, (though I know you used the kid, but I like the kitty also :)
Thanks so much for your very wonderful input here on this topic! I really really appreciate this! :) :) :)
Love,
Navasi

This is so Awesome!!

Hare Krishna Dearest Mataji,

Thank you for such a fantastic post. I was waiting for someone to post on this topic. You have so nicely explained that Krishna gives us a choice at a particular time to choose Him or material desire. After reading the Bhagavad-Gita I have theoritically understood that we should just ask love for Krishna but when I practically apply it seems very much impossible to me. When we are in distress, are we allowed to ask Krishna to free us from the distress. By doing so is it that we are asking for something material from Krishna and thus we would be drifted away from Him. Another thing is that when Krishna gives us a choice and we like disobedient children continue to ask Him to fulfill our mundane material desires just to satisfy our senses then will Lord Krishna fulfill the desire and thus take us away from Him or will He burn our material desires so that we no longer will desire sense gratification and thus come much close to Him?

Love,
Mihir

Impossible Applications

Hare Krishna, Dear Mihir,
Yes, it seems quite impossible to me at times also, to apply even the most basic understandings that I have.
You have brought out some very good and important points here.
Thank you for that.
First, when we are in distress, we are not actually supposed to be asking to be relieved from that distress, only just to ask to become more devoted to Krishna, more surrendered to Krishna, etc..
The reason for this is that we understand that we have been put into distress by Krishna for the purpose of our purification from material desires. So, since we know that is the reason for our distress, praying to be relieved from it would be counter productive, because it is only Krishna trying to help us become closer to Him, so why would we ask Him to take that opportunity away from us?
The other interesting thing you've said here is in relation to Krishna fulfilling our desires if we continue to desire something material in opposition to our spiritual advancement.
This is the way I understand it: that Krishna does in fact give us what we keep desiring so very much, and allows us to satisfy that desire, however... (and here's the thing, this is a very huge however!):
He does it in such a way that in the end we will only desire Him.
One example of this would be: He will give you what you are desiring, but in such a way as to sort of teach you a lesson, the thing will in the end cause you a great deal of misery and you will most likely wish you had never desired it in the first place, what to speak of actually asked to have that desire fulfilled, what to speak of actually engaging in the activity you were so desiring! lol :)
Krishna is pretty amazing, eh?
Thanks so much, Mihir, for bringing up all these really relevant and helpful points and discussing this with me, I really appreciate this...... :)
Love,
Navasi

This is so heart touching :) :) :)

Dearest Mataji, Hare Krishna!!

Thank you for such a lovely reply. You have really touched my heart. I really loved what you said especially

' He will give you what you are desiring, but in such a way as to sort of teach you a lesson, the thing will in the end cause you a great deal of misery and you will most likely wish you had never desired it in the first place, what to speak of actually asked to have that desire fulfilled, what to speak of actually engaging in the activity you were so desiring! lol :) '

I am quite fond of accumulating more and more wealth, may be for this reason I guess one day Krishna will teach me a lesson due to which I will hate money and I will only love Him. :) :) :)

I really thank you for everything. :)

Mihir

Ever Expanding Discussions

Hare Krishna, Dearest Mihir,
Well, there you have done it again! You are always coming up with newer and newer points to be brought out and discussed!!! :)
I don't know how you do this, Mihir! You are some kind of magician I think! lol :)
So, you see, now we will have the wonderful opportunity to discuss the other possible way that Krishna might fulfill your desire in such a way that you will only want to Love and Serve Him!!! :)
If you are very fond of accumulating wealth, as you have said, Krishna could very well decide to allow you to accumulate enormous wealth, more and more, and then..... (and here's the however to his one! :) :
You will decide to use your wealth in the service of Krishna!!!
In this way He fulfilled your desire, but in a way that you will only want to love and serve Him!
You would still be accumulating your wealth, but along the way, at some point in your spiritual advancement, you would loose any desire to use your wealth for anything but devotional service! Giving your wealth to Krishna in this way, that's a great devotional service Mihir! (though all devotional service is great, but whatever helps spread Lord Chaitanya's sankirtan movement, that is the most wonderful thing of all! :)
So, that's another example of how Krishna would fulfill your desire but in such a way that you only want to love and serve Him.... :)
You know, Mihir, the interesting thing to me here is that this point you've just helped me to bring out really comes very close to answering the question I was struggling with myself that caused me to post this topic in the first place!!! :)
Thank you again for bringing out all these wonderful points to discuss.
Love,
Navasi

Thank you my magician Mataji :)

Hare Krishna Dearest Mataji, I think you are a magician as you just solve all the queries that are there in my mind. Srila Prabhupada said that we cannot burn our desires, we can purify it. Now I am able to understand this as you said that if we have a desire to accumulate wealth then we can do so, provided we use it for the service of Lord Krishna. This is really fantastic. Thank you so much for such wonderful explanation. :) :) :)

Love,
Mihir.
