Hare Krishna!
Can someone recommend some brand of tortillas which does not contain eggs?
Basically, I want it as a substitute for 'roti' (bread made by flour).
I saw some brands in the market but I saw the ingredients they had eggs!!
2) Does Hunt's tomato puree or crushed tomatoes, used in places where natural tomatoes are very expensive contain something objectionable?
If yes, what is the other alternative??
Thanks to all in advance :)
Ola!
Perhaps you should tell us what your loction is approximately. I am in Australia so any brand here won't be available to you in some other location. Eggs in tortilla seems weird doesn't it? I haven't seen that before. Have you thought of making them yourself?

Anyway I expect they do exist egg free. Does anyone know any brands? Helloooo?

Using Corn flour
I am considering making them myself.
Perhaps, becoming a little less lazy. :)
Thanks for telling the link.
The link mentions corn floor.I have never used corn floor rather wheat flour. Does it tastes something different?
I will buy the quantity accordingly.
Thanks once again for your reply. Hare Krishna!!
I think
They tast different. Wheat has a stronger taste than corn. You can hardly taste the corn in the tortilla. It's lighter as well.

That' cool
If it is lighter then I can eat many. Yummy!!

Need to know Brands
My location is Montana,United States.
Perhaps, Some brands are available everywhere.
Eggs in tortilla is weird. Eating egg is itself weird. Smells so bad. Yuk!!
I saw the ingredients it had eggs and it stated that clearly.
Making them by my own. Oh no! I am too lazy to do that.
I dropped here recently and just eating bread (because I am sure it does not has anything bad). Ordered rice in a restraunt and it had octopus. Gosh!!!
It is a wallmart store here, which has branches elsewhere as well.
So, hopefully people living in the US can suggest something.
If some one can tell me some brand , it would be great for this lazy creature. :(
Octopus, that must have been a shock
Yes I am too lazy also : )
Come on Americans what brands of tortilla do you offer to

Octopus!!! That was a disater
Oh!! That was a disaster. I jumped out of the chair and scared the waitress!!!
Perhaps, I would have suffered more than the octopus if I would have eaten that!!! Thank God!!!
actually
I don't think you would have suffered more than the poor octopus, it choked to death when they pulled it out of the water, you would just get stomach ache. Stick to tortillas ________________________________________

I agree and also need some dietary suggestions for heavy exercis
Yes, I agree.Poor animals really suffer a lot in inhumane conditions but what to do people can use any nonsense argument to justify themselves. Here, people eat non-veg in everything.
People just have so many myths about vegetarian food. I told a friend that I have never eaten meat.
She said-"what??? what are you talking about???" Then I explained her that vegetarian diet has everything needed. For protein, one can eat sprouted pulses.
Another was arguing, Can we build muscles on a vegetarian diet? I said yes but didn't had much arguments to support myself.
Just curious to know what vegetarian diet should we take for heavy exercise? Somebody said eggs in milk..I said "Yuk!! I hate the very smell. It stinks."
Most
Most people are ignorant of nutrition, even doctors. Most people get all of their educaton after school from the television, magazines and newspapers.
World champion athletes in all fields have been vegetarians, runners, weight lifters and more.
It is a myth of marketing that people need animal protein. Elephants and bulls are vegetarian, they have muscles stronger than any humans.
Check out this list of vegetarian athletes

Tortillas
Hare Krshna
I wouldn't offer store tortillas to Krshna, because they have preservatives, not eggs. Unfortunately, all ready-to-eat store foods have to have them.
Of course, its always good to start somewhere , and eat healthy vegetarian food.
**I would recommend "Tia Rosa" - fresher, good in taste and texture and minimal in preservatives.
http://www.tiarosa.com/
I doubt that they will be available in Montana, though.
**Second to that comes "Mission" - more sour, with preservatives , but no eggs !
PLEASE READ : http://www.missionmenus.com/FAQs.aspx
***Some Kroger stores make bakery-fresh tortillas on a conveyor belt. Recommended, last for 3-4 days or a week.
I am not surprised to hear about eggs in tortillas, if Ben & Jerry's can add egg yolks to ice-cream ( WHY ??!! )
Also, some pasta and tortilla brands are prepared on surfaces that were used for egg products like egg-noodles by the same company - like Barilla. I try to stay away from these. 'O Organics' makes good pasta.
***Nikhil, as Abrennan suggests, how about making fresh tortillas or rotis instead ? On weekends perhaps ?
Its all about mind-set , believe me. It does NOT take long to make, say 10 small rotis - using a simplified procedure. Its a lot of fun. My 9-year-old loves to roll them out... and if given a chance, would love to make the dough and pan-roast them.

Haribol!
This is just a comment for the general subject being discussed. I don't know if tortillas are cooked in any way before sale, but still, maybe some of this information might be useful.
I dealt for several years with trying to find commercially prepared bread products that could be offered. I called companies, and wasn't always given proper information.
Then I found out from devotees that it's really not best to offer or eat grain products that have been cooked/baked/prepared with heat, if they have been prepared by non-devotees.
Ideally, it is best not to consume any edible products if they have not been prepared by ourselves, or other devotees, and of course offered.
The question came up about emergencies, if when out for a length of time it becomes necessary to eat, and one must choose from what is available. I was told the best choices include nuts and fruit in their natural states (meaning we remove the peel or shell ourselves), to look for items with the least preparation by others. Next choice would be items with minimal preparation. One devotee in a class brought up salad bar raw vegetables (which have some preparation), but this was not as good as many times there is a risk of non-vegetarian items being prepared at the same business.
This was an issue that had come up for me, as many times I am out for a great part of the day, and am faced with carrying prasadam with me, or purchasing something while out. Due to surgeries, I must continue to eat during the day, even if I am out longer than expected and what I have brought has run out. I think the best instruction I have received on this was simply to "make better plans."
Two years ago I met the devotee who explained the grain issue. So at that time I stopped using commercially prepared grain products. I was told it helps the consciousness greatly to avoid such products. I was aware of feeling more peaceful, more balanced emotionally.
(We should always continue to offer preparations as long as there is nothing objectionable included.)

* just an additional note - commercially prepared bread CAN contain non-vegetarian ingredients. Several years ago I traveled with a devotee across several states in the US, and had called the bakery that bakes the bread in Texas that is sold as Wal*mart's store brand, to be certain there were no non-vegetarian ingredients in it. Then we stopped only at Wal*mart stores in the various states we traveled through to purchase more of the same Wal*mart store-brand of bread. Only afterward did I find out that different bakeries provide the bread for Wal*mart stores in different regions of the US, and the different bakeries may use different recipes for the bread. So, whatever brand of bread is being considered, it would be best to locate the bakery that provides the product for that label in that area, and question them as to what form of the ingredients listed they are using, to determine if anything non-vegetarian is included.

These are all very helpful informational points that you have mentioned, and a good guideline in general.
The first thing i said - if you notice - is that :
"I wouldn't offer store tortilla to Krshna. "
All ready-to-eat store foods can have something or the other,
animal fat, cheeses, preservatives, not to mention where they have been cooked.
I only gave the information to Nikhil since he was looking for it, and there was no answer.
I said, if you must, atleast eat healthy veg food, OK, here are some things for you, but why not make them yrself when possible (so they can be offered to Krshna).
I wanted to be careful and not discourage/scare any readers from prasadam.
And like i said, i am not surprised to hear about eggs in tortilla.
Hare Krshna
Thank You!
Sorry for my lazy reply. ;)
I appreciate your answer thanks for sharing it.
"And like i said, i am not
"And like i said, i am not surprised to hear about eggs in tortilla. " yes we should always read our labels, I once bought a packet of salted peanuts at a gas station. Usually the ingredients are salt and peanuts. But this packet actually said, salt, gelatin, and peanuts!!! I was lucky that I read it otherwise, eeew gross.
Yes, you never know !
Hare Krshna.
Hare Krsna!
Yes, I noticed that you had written that! (It's what gave me the courage to put my comment in.)
I was reading through the other comments, and I was thinking things, but hesitant to write, and then I read your comment! Thank you for being the one to mention these things.
Also, I was thinking too, I don't want to discourage anyone.
bhaktincarol
:)
Bhaktin Carol,
That was very good information.
Perhaps you should post it as a new forum topic under
"Prasadam" ?
Hare Krshna !
Need help with my bullet proof rotis!!!
Hare Krishna!
Thank you for your wonderful reply. I checked the links that you have posted. The brands you suggested seem to be quite good.I will check them out in the store.
I can make rotis on my own. But, the problem is that here it is an electric gas. I can make rotis well with fire but on electric gas they remain very hard and some seem like bullet proof. Any suggestions how to make them soft and fluffy?
Also, If someone can suggest how can I keep them stored for longer. Busy days!! May not get time to make them everyday.
Hare Krishna!
:) Been there

OK, now i can give you some tips for simple pan roasting.
** Leave the dough covered at room temperature for an hour or as long as you can. This allows the gluten from the wheat to react with the water to make elastic dough.
** The dough should be made with just enough oil by making a well 2" wide for flour about 6-7 " wide. The dough should not look and feel oily, it should not feel sticky, just enough to cream your hands while kneading/rolling. Ideally, no dusting with dry flour should be done to roll it out.
** Roll them a little thick, not too thin, to avoid cracker-like rotis. They may puff up partially.
** In any case, do not dust with too much flour. If you have to keep sprinkling dry flour after a bit of rolling, it means yr dough is not right. This will make stiff rotis/chapatis.
** Some people suggest adding some yogurt or cream to the dough, to keep it soft. If just enough yogurt is added, it can help, otherwise dough can become sticky and again you have to dust it with too much flour - making the chapati stiff.
Good luck
Haribol.
I don't think so. :)
I don't think that I am talking to the wrong person the information you provided is quite helpful. Particularly, adding a bit of oil or butter make them far better, this is what I have found.
Thanks for your useful tips.
Thank You!
