How do you recognize a Saligram ?

Hare Krishna dear devotees,

I have a question about Saligram.
I think a saligram of Hayagriva came to me, but Im not sure !

I found him at work, I must have seen him 100 times before I picked him up. Every time I saw the "stone" I thought of my dream and Hayagriva. I had the strong feeling I should pick it up.
When I finally did it felt good, and when I took a close look I saw some markings which made me think this might be a Real Saligram. (allthough I dont know much on the subject)
I see marks of a horse nose, an eye and the forehead shape horses have.

I know saligrams are only found in one place in India, but its possible that some riverrocks where shipped to the west and a saligram found its way here ?

I had a dream a couple of years ago that I would find 2 saligram ( one in safron colour, not sure if that excist ??) and another dream maybe 10 to 15 years ago where Hayagriva Himself appeared to me ( he showed me a (coloured)light, and told me always to follow the light if in doubt. This must be the light of the veda's.. I didnt knew who hayagriva was back then, I didnt know anything about any hindu gods)

So all this together makes me think it might be really a saligram.

Maybe its wishfull thinking though :s

Can anybody spread some light on this matter ? A little light is allready better then none at all ;)

Thank you in advance!

Hare Krishna !

I hereby post some pictures, I hope its visible for all.

Is it possible that

Is it possible that saligrams do not have to come from India?

In the Yoruba tradition, and in the Santeria tradition in Cuba which is based on Yoruba, there is a tradition of worship of otanes, or otan, somewhat similar to the saligram tradition. There, they use otanes / stones from any riverbed.

Thank you

Hare Krishna dear devotees,

Thank you for your replies.
I'm afraid this is not a real saligram, because they are usually found in a riverbed in Nepal, and I found mine in Amsterdam.
I am kindoff disappointed, but also happy because this made me think of Krishna and search contact with his devotees, something I didn't do in a while ( I mean contact with devotees).
I keep the saligram ( or should I say reminder stone in this case?) on my altar, I hope and think it's not an offence, I also keep some mountaincrystals on my altar, just for decoration.
( or sit places for the Deities :) )
Thanks again for reading and replying to my post, Haribol !

Dear Matrika,

Sorry, I don't know much about Saligrams either, but I think you can find some valuable information at this website.
