Extramarital Affairs

Hare Krishna Mataji!
How is your devotional service goin on?
Mataji, i wanted to ask you a wierd question,
Why do people have extra marital affairs?

The reason for asking is because in India nw a days it has become so common.
Is it one of the symptoms of Kali's influence on us or is it the decision taken by us using our free will?

~ ~ ~

Dear Abhishek,

Well, really it's both things. It's a manifestation of the age of Kali Yuga certainly, because people have very little regard for religious principles.
It's also because of our free will of course, since Krishna is allowing us to make these choices. But, that's the whole reason for us being here in this material world. We wanted to be the enjoyer, the "lord" the one who is served and pleased, we became jealous of Krishna being the enjoyer and Lord. So, this kind of thing is just another manifestation of our fierce independence from Krishna.
Our desires and lusts are so strong to enjoy in whatever way we can manage that we abandon all sanity and religious principle and act against the will of Krishna.
So, it's ultimately just a manifestation of that desire to enjoy and be free of the laws of Krishna.

It also comes from the deep emptyness that people who don't fill their hearts with Krishna feel. Being without Krishna makes people desperate to fill that void, that emptyness in some way, in any way, so they grasp at straws... (affairs and other things) thinking these things will make them happy, make them feel fulfilled and satisfied.
In this way, they only become more and more entangled in the complexities of the material energy, caught in the cycle of their own karma.
So, we can see how important it is that we try as hard as possible to make a firm connection with Krishna so we won't be driven to these kinds of things.

Degraded

Yes, the desire to be both the enjoyer and the creator is the sole reason for our being shipwrecked on the island of material existence. In such a condition, we seek enjoyment through our material senses that can in no way satisfy us. A person can never get enough sex, wealth, power, etc. to satisfy themselves (because such impermanent things can not satisfy the spirit-soul who is eternal, full of knowledge, and full of bliss) and consequently we are always burning in the fire of material desires.

The Vedic system seeks to elevate us out of this mire by engaging us in duties that are beneficial for our spiritual advancement. In so doing, the desire for sense-gratification is met, but it is met in a way that allows for spiritual progress. One can not artificially deny the senses. They must have engagement.

But, now a days, this spiritual culture is wholly absent and people engage themselves in abominable activities that neglect the cultivation of spiritual advancement. Such a civilization in non-Aryan. Basically, it can not even be said to be a human civilization. It is more a less, like Prabhupada said, a civilization of polished animals. Animals will have sex with multiple partners without concern for "marriage." But, what separates a human being and an animal is religion.

Human beings have the ability to control their senses by cultivating and living by religious principles. Animals can not practice religion, but human beings can. Therefore, to attain this human form of life and to waste this opportunity for spiritual advancement by acting like a dog or a cat is highly condemned by the acharyas. Unfortunately, such dog-like consciousness will only result in a dog-like mentaity that will only degrade the living entity into lower life forms.

That is why spiritual culture of knowledge and educating people as to their position in life is so important. Without such knowledge, the society is degraded and will remain so, and so many living entities who have attained this human form of life, will simply have spoiled their lives.
