where have all the hippies gone ?

Namaste.Flower PowerFlower Power

The other day, while filling up at the gas station, I had to ask myself, “Where have all the hippies gone?” You know that “we’re not going to take it” generation; the ones who left home, left school, and every other material security to stand in front of national guard troops placing flowers in the barrels of guns to stop a senseless war and a corrupt administration. It seems that the generation of change has now given up the fight for what’s right, abandoned their rebellious natures and are now willing to be pushed around by both corporate America and a government gone wild. This was the generation that brought you flag burning, draft card burning, political figure placard burning and yes, even bra burning. They fostered the most meaningful and poetic music of any generation in known history. They began movements to save the planet, save the whales, the dolphins, the children… And they actually did bring about some change in this country that eventually spread, in a small way, throughout the planet. Now, as I hand the clerk at the convenience store over $50 to fill up my gas tank and contemplate my lost civil liberties, I ask again “Where have all the hippies gone?”

Well, I just saw one group on the golf course teeing off at the 8th hole; others were meeting with their lawyers, bankers, and brokers. A full table at the local restaurant all looked to be about my age. MY AGE, wait a minute. I am talking about MY generation. Have I forgotten about that hair to my knees, those tie-dyed tees, those late night dubies, playing music until three? Sorry, as you can see I wasn’t one of the creative poets of my generation. But I was there, and believe me what is going on in our society today would have brought about constant sit-ins, marches, boycotts, and every other imaginable form of protest until the gas prices came down, the war ended and basic civil liberties were reinstated for every man, woman and child in this nation.

Which brings me to the point of this blog, complacency. The once caring ’60’s generation now wiles away in their material comfort heaven, counting their 401Ks’ and planning on retirement in the Bahamas, all the while ignoring lost liberties, corporate and governmental corruption, and a environmental catastrophe that is destroying Mother Earth. And what does this have to do with my Krishna consciousness, you ask. Nothing - if you are continually striving to better your spiritual life in a very determined way - every minute, of every hour, of every day. But, if you are not yet on that totally unmotivated, uninterrupted platform, then this hippy story can give rise to some developmental contemplation. Now there’s a new New Age term for you - developmental contemplation.

I won’t overly belabor the point here, but one must work daily to assure that their devotional practice is not falling by the way of those aging hippies. Daily strive to advance in your loving devotion to Krishna as you attend to the nine practices. Chant a little more attentively… strive to hear more during japa, kirtan and class…spend more time reading and a lot less time in idle gossip…worship with true dedication to pleasing the deity…seek out and take shelter of those devotees who truly inspire you to advance - - - you get my drift. Most of all, never become complacent…never slacken your determination to attain pure unalloyed devotional service…don’t let yourself become content to just be a devotee - constantly strive to be the very best devotee you can be. Don’t act humble – become truly humble by never desiring a speck of honor. Fully surrender by abandoning all self-motivated desire - Krishna has so much more real pleasure to offer than the petty illusions available in this temporary material playground. Cruel time will eventually resolve all the corporate greed, governmental ineptitude, rising inflation and environmental chaos that has resulted from social complacency. But personal complacency in our devotional lives can rob us of the sweet nectar of Krishna’s loving embrace for what will seem like an eternity.

Being always enthusiastic

Very nice blog, Dulal Candra Prabhu. Yes, in the material sphere we all get worn out and tired fighting battles against maya. We tend to practice devotional service in the same way - becoming complacent thinking this is all I can do. Speaking for myself, many times I give the excuse 'Just add Krishna' to my life instead of making Krishna the center of my life, for not willing to progress. We need to be enthusiastic, determined, patient, follow the principles, and associate with devotees so that Krishna consciousness remains ever fresh to our dull brains.

Thanks so much for awakening me.

Waking up the world to Love/Krishna

Speaking of flowers, I looked for flowers to offer to my Krishna deity on Nrshimhadeva Caturdasi, He was my only association.

I was surrounded in the park by people who don't care to be Krishna conscious, though they like the flowers.
It's funny how the flowers they pick will soon rot and be offered to no one.
It is so much more meaningful to offer them to Krishna,
"Patram puspam phalam toyam" that is the key to Love and Devotion.
It seems like the hippies readily understood that. It seems now that a lot of people are ignorant of anything greater than that what is going on in their own lives. I have had the same experience on my own.
I have no association with devotees, the only devotees I see every now and then are in my local Sri Ganesha Temple but no ISKCON types. I find it sad that no ISKCON devotees where I live want to hang out with the Hindus, this is sad.
If there is no togetherness with either Hindus or Mlechha cultures etc then nothing will happen and devotees will just be on their own.
The Beatles brought us the "Love is All You Need" philosophy which I wish more people would adopt again.
It almost seems as if Srila Prabhupada had an effect on everyone in the western culture when he came here in 1965, at the same time Psychedelic music was being invented!
Even as a child in the 80's I did not feel as much emptiness as I feel now. Most people are so immersed in false-ego consciousness.
It always feels like nothing is going on these days, it seems like that is the way it goes when there is no regular association.
It seems to be the same way for every day people as well.
Whether the hippies give up or devotees give up something needs to be done. "We need to show an interest in other people." as one ISKCON guru once lectured.

Are'nt we heading towards a new Golden Age at this moment?
Maybe that is what will happen after 2012 instead of some stupid apocalypse. People seem so perplexed these days and more so much caught up in Maya because then just cannot live without their technology.

If people would just stop to listen to the chanting of Hare Krsna then maybe they would be joyful and not follow all the nonsense that is going on these days.
Unfortunately I know that a lot of people think that Hare Krsna was some fad in the 60's. How does this change?
Luckily we have the internet to preach with instead of just street corners but will there be a balance?

I'm sure Lord Krishna is working something out to reach more people. I pray for more togetherness, we all need to work together. It's not just chant and hope that things happen, it does not work that way I have found.

Ignorance

The complacency you speak of is so prevalent everywhere, but since we are referring to the U.S, I will stick wth that. I can't help but get angry when I hear 1) the U.S. government is telling its citizens that the money that it was supposed to put away for them (i.e. social security) is all but gone. 2) Millions of people are without health insurance in the U.S. and the cost of health insurance continues to rise so that more and more people can not afford it, especially the elderly.

This angers me because the elderly people should be protected and this government is allowing its elderly to be taken advantage of, and yet, no one is doing anything about it. It is accepted by the people that the politicians are cheaters, lyers, and corrupt. People will simply shake their heads and say "Well, what can I do about it?" I don't understand why there aren't massive movements such as during the "hippie times."

But, we can see from this just how degraded we have become in this age of Kali, and how desperate the situation is. People are complacent about human decency!

The need to spread Krishna Consciousness is dire! If anything, this should be the reason for devotees to be become more and more serious about performing their devotional service, and fight against this lethargy which is a quality of the mode of ignorance.

i'm still a Flower-Child Love and Peace Hippy, from 1965-2008!

Hare Krsna!
i decided a couple of Years ago that no-matter what happens, i will keep the GOOD from the 60's in my life.
For a while i felt pressured to "conform" but i have stayed and hopefully grown into a REAL person in Krsna Consciousness.
That's what i enjoyed from the 60's, Being REAL and Being in the NOW.
i am very greatful for the non-judgemental "let it be" attitude
we had in those days, i strive to keep this, also in the 60's is when
i first found out about Srila Prabhupada, Wow,this alone is the greatest of all.

Truly Amazing!

That was such an interesting read! You have presented the idea of KC in such a novel way, which I think will be most appealing to today's youngsters.

I especially like your point about how one should not be content of just being a devotee, but instead should constantly strive for perfection..thats something which we all need to keep in mind. Thank you for sharing this. Haribol Shweta
