Vyasa Puja

This topic is for discussion of worship of the Spiritual Master in the home...
I can only tell someone about how the worship of Srila Prabhupad is done since that is all I know about....
Perhaps some other devotees here can explain how the worship of their Spiritual Masters is done, since this question is for a new person... (new to Krishna consciousness) and I have no idea what the method is for this...
So, please lets all discuss and explain this for new people...
What do you all do?
How do you do it?
Do you have pictures of your Guru?
Do you also have a picture of Srila Prabhupad?
Also, who do you offer respects/pooja to if you are not yet initiated?
(and it would also be helpful to me to know about this since people ask me and I have no idea about any of this, only about Srila Prabhupad.)
Thank you,
Love,
Navasi

Making the Offering Making

Making the Offering

Making an offering is a transcendental experience of lovingly preparing food as a meditation and spiritual service to the Divine.. Such a process provides a deep, loving and personal connection with the Lord, as well as a beautiful meal that feeds both the soul and the body! The foodstuffs that have been intentionally offered to the Lord are called prasadam, or Divine "mercy". The most important aspect in any offering is in having a mood of deep gratitude and devotion for the Lord's pleasure. The simple and advanced techniques mentioned here provide methods of spiritualizing your food, regardless of your facility, time, or resources.

Mini Offering:

Often times we must eat out in a public restaurant, at school, or on the run due to a busy schedule. The mini offering practically suits a sincere spiritualist in such a way as to simplify the ritual, yet still offer vegetarian foodstuffs to the Lord.

Sri Vishnu, Sri Vishnu, Sri Vishnu

This mantra can be used discreetly and in accordance to time, place, and circumstance. This name of God can be spoken with folded palms and in devotion of heart as you meditate on the foods you wish to offer to God.

If one is inclined and capable, the Srila Prabhupada Pranati, Gauranga Pranati, and Maha Mantra can also be recited as a shortened version of the regular ritual offering. (see Mantras for Offering Food)

Advanced Offering:

This offering is for advanced practitioners and is performed at the Bhakti Yoga Club Sunday Program. One who is interested in learning how to integrate the advanced offering at home can assist and observe on Sundays, while recieving personal explination of the following methods and preparations:

The Home Altar: First, reserve a special place for the offering. It can be a tabletop or an entire room converted into a temple. (The altar consists of a raised platform with a picture of Lord Krishna and His eternal consort Srimate Radharani on it, a picture of Lord Caitanya and His eternal consorts (the pancha-tattva), and a picture of the spiritual master. The spiritual master accepts the offering of the disciple and offers it to his own spiritual master, who in turn offers it to his spiritual master. In this way the offering ascends through a succession of spiritual masters, until it reaches Lord Krishna. Devotees who have not been initiated yet, or who have received initiation from Srila Prabhupada, use a picture of Srila Prabhupada. Devotees who are disciples of Srila Prabhupada’s disciples use a picture of their own spiritual master.

The Mantras: The After you have finished the preparations, place a portion of each on new plates or bowls that you have purchased just for this purpose. Bring the dishes to your home altar and place them before the picture(s) of the Lord. One should clap the hands three times to begin the offering, bow down before the Lord on the altar, and while ringing a bell lovingly recite the food offering mantras. The offering should remain for the Lord for about 5-10 minutes.

The Transfer: When you finish offering, clap three times seeking permission with gratitude and in closure of the ceremony. Take the dishes back to the kitchen, transfer the food (now prasadam) into normal eating bowls, and wash the Lord’s offering plates. All the food prepared is now considered prasadam. After carefully putting the offering plates away, distribute the prasadam and enjoy the taste of the transcendental realm! Before the meal, you can recite the prayers for honoring prasadam.

Mantras for offering Food to the Lord

The devotees of Krishna recite three prayers for offering their food to the Lord. They each are repeated three times. (The first is the pranama-mantra of their spiritual master.) For disciples of Srila Prabhupada and uninitiated devotees this is Srila Prabhupada’s pranama- mantra, the Srila Prabhupada Pranati:

nama om visnu-padaya
krishna presthaya bhu-tale
srimate bhaktivedanta-
swamin iti namine

namas te sarasvati deve
gaura-vani- pracarine
nirvisesa- sunyavadi-
pascatya- desa- tarine

“I offer my respectful obeisances unto his Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who is very dear to Lord Krishna, having taken shelter of His lotus feet. Our respectful obeisances are unto you, O spiritual master, servant of Sarasvati Gosvami. You are kindly preaching the message of Lord Caitanyadeva and delivering the Western countries, which are filled with impersonalism and voidism.”

The second prayer is offered to Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the incarnation of the Lord as a devotee, and is known as the Sri Gauranga Pranama:

namo maha -vadanyaya
krishna- prema- pradaya te
krishnaya krishna- caitanya-
namne gaura-tvise namah

“O most munificentincarnation! You are Krishna Himself appearing as Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. You have assumed the golden color of Srimate Radharani, and You are widely distributing pure love of Krishna. We offer our respectful obeisances unto You.

The third prayer comes from the Visnu Purana (1.19.65) and addresses Lord Krishna directly:

namo brahmanya- devaya
go- brahmana- hitaya ca
jagad- dhitaya krsnaya
govindaya namo namah

“My Lord, You are the well- wisher of the cows and the brahmanas, and You are the well- wisher of the entire human society and world.”

After reciting these prayers it is custom to chant the Maha- Mantra three times.

offering bhoga

also, if you are preaching or something and you need some food, you can get some fruit or vegetable or some chips or something and say "sri visnu" three times.

and sometimes when I am cooking at someone elses house to put the bhoga on a seperate plate and offer it to pictures while ringing bells bowing down and chanting mantras might be a little alien to them. lol So what I do is just bow my head, fold my hands and say the prabhupada pranati and in that way offer the bhoga to prabhupada.

your servant,
brett

new and unsure ?

Hare Krishna

As I do not yet have a guru.. live far from a temple at present,
I have a picture of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.. on the wall.. where is easy to see.. I light incense and candles everyday next to the picture.. kneel and touch the head to the floor.. I thank Him for bringing Krsna to my life.. and to the world.. also ask for guidance and forgivness.
Pick some nice flowers to place before His picture.
Be sure to be humble and sincere, also clean, wash hands etc first.

Also if one has no photo of Radha Krsna... a picture of Krsna is also ok... the 2 pictures are together in my home.
It is also very clean in this area, as is where I offer food preparations to Krsna.. on a special plate that is not used for anything else.. for me I use a silver serving tray and goblet.

Dear Prabhupada is my guru and spiritual master.. until initiation.
Though He will always be my Guru.. through His teachings and books.

Offer respect, love as you would to Krsna... as Prabhupada is Krsna's loyal, sincere devotee and is very dear to Krsna.

They Both will help you, if you are sincere and attempting to Love Krsna.

I hope this helps a little !

Hare Krsna

Billy's picture

A Temple of Krishna In Your Home

Hare Krishna
When one first enquires of Krsna.. there may be many reasons why, for me... the attraction to a picture of Krsna was one of the first... so at the very beginning.. I guess it is ok to use a picture of Krsna.. ( if that is all you have ).. for devotional service in your home.

Attraction to the Radha- Krishna Deities will soon follow.. it is recommended to worship the deities... they are Krishna.. in a material form here on earth for us to worship.
***************************************************
Guests visiting a temple for the first time are often puzzled by the ceremonial offering of vegetarian dishes to the form of Krishna on the altar- and understandably so.
After all, what does the omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent Lord want with our little plate of rice and vegetables ? Has He suddenly become hungry ?
Hasn't He created countless tons of food ? Isn't God self- sufficient ? Does Krishna really need these offerings of food ?
In fact, Krishna does ask for these offerings, not because He needs our rice and vegetables, but because He wants our devotion.
In the Bhagavad-Gita (9.26) He says, ''If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water, I will accept it."
When Krishna asks us to offer Him food, we should understand that He is actually inviting us to reawaken our eternal loving relationship with Him.
At first we comply in a mood of faith mixed with duty; later; as our realization matures, we do it with affection and love. Just as anybody naturally offers the best he/she has to his/her beloved, the devotee offers Krishna his/her wealth, intelligence, his/her life, and vegetarian food.

Offering food to Krishna

First, reserve a special plate for the offering. It can be a tabletop or an entire room converted into a temple.
Make an altar with a picture of Lord Krishna on it.. and or a picture/photo of the Radha Krishna deities... on Krishna's left is Srimati Radharini, His eternal consort. She is Krishna's pleasure potency, and it is She who awards love of Godhead to the sincere devotee.
If possible, put a photograph of a Krishna conscious spiritual master on the altar.. ( I also put flowers on the altar ).. The spiritual master accepts the offering of his disciple and offers it to his own spiritual master, who in turn offers it to his spiritual master. In this way the offering ascends through a succession of spiritual masters, until it reaches Lord Krishna.
Since I do not yet have a spiritual master from initiation, I use a picture of dear Srila Prabhupada.. as is the only way I can see how to follow the principles.
So one can see how very necessary it is to find a spiritual master.

The devotees of the Hare Krishna movement always have a photo of Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, and if a devotee is a disciple of one of Srila Prabhupada's disciples, he/she also has a photo of his/her own spiritual master.
A Krishna conscious spiritual master who is visibly present in this world can personally guide you to perfection in spiritual life.

From the shopping, to the cooking, meditate on pleasing Krishna. Look for the best fruit and vegetables... If one is unsure of animal products in food, it's best to stick with vegan food, until you are positive that what you are using is 100% vegetarian... avoid gelatin, rennet, lecithin ..(unless soy) and anything with onions and garlic.
If a product has a blank label.. don't buy it !

Now you are ready to cook for Krishna.

The cook thinks about Krishna's pleasure, not his/her own.. and thinks "My Lord has kindly provided me with these ingredients, so let me combine them in such a way that He will be pleased."
Chanting the Hare Krishna mantra or listening to devotional recordings helps to remember Krishna.. and also avoids mundane talk in the kitchen.

**Cleanliness in next to Godliness. The cook should have a clean mind/thoughts, wear clean clothes, hair tied back if needed, make sure everything is spotless in the kitchen before you start to prepare the food for offering.
"Krishna will accept a very simple offering from a clean kitchen", Srila Prabhupada said," but He will not accept an elaborate offering from a dirty kitchen."
** Prasada ( food already offered ) and bhoga (food not yet offered) are never mixed. We do not want to offer Krishna the same thing twice.. keep the two in separate containers.

** The cook never tastes the food before offering it-not even to test it. Krishna must be the first to relish it.
If something is taken before being offered.. the entire preparation is polluted and can no longer be offered.

**When the meal is ready, it is time to offer it to Krishna ( on that special plate that nobody else eats off ) the rest of the food stays in the pots until the offering is finished.
Put a small (special) glass of cool water by Krishna's plate, along with a spoon and tiny plate with a little salt and pepper. You may also light one or two sticks of incense to provide a pleasant atmosphere.
After putting the plate on the altar, recite the Hare Krishna mantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Repeat this mantra three (3) times.. it is a prayer: "My dear Radharani and Krishna, please engage me in Your devotional service."
The more our consciouness is fixed on pleasing Krishna, the more He enjoys the offering.. it is our sincerity that attracts Krishna.
**After the offering, remove Krishna's plate from the altar and transfer the prasada to a serving plate. Wash Krishna's plate and bowls and put them away. Now the prasada can be served, the prasada that comes directly from the Lord's plate is called maha-prasada (maha means "great", prasada means "mercy") and is extra special. The person serving should see that everyone gets some maha-prasada.
** The proper mentality for eating prasada is described by Srila Prabhupada in the Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita: "Prasada is non-different from Krishna, therefore instead of eating prasada, one should honour it... it is not an ordinary preparation of food.
Prasada means favor. One should consider prasada a favor of Krishna. Krishna is very kind, as tastes many nice foods and offers it back to His devotees... by eating prasada one makes advancement in spiritual life.. ordinary food is not on an equal level with prasada."
In other words, if while eating, one thinks of prasada as a manifestation of Krishna's mercy, he/she is considered to have actually stopped eating, now eating has become honoring.
By thus honoring Krishna, who has come in the form of prasada, one pleases Krishna, and when Krishna is pleased His devotee is pleased.

This is real yoga, linking with the supreme Lord, the simple process of offering food makes us aware of an essential teaching of the Vedas: everything comes from Krishna, and everything should be offered back to Him for His pleasure.
So everyday when you cook, cook for Krishna and offer the food to Him. Before long, your home will start to feel like a temple, and you will be well on your way home.. back to Godhead.

Please do not put any remnats of prasada in the rubbish, or in a bin of any kind.. it is sacred.. feed it to the animals.. put it in the ocean or river, or bury it in the earth.

There are other prayers that are used, though if you are new to offering food.. the recitation of the Hare Krishna mantra is the easiest method.. to begin with.

I am happy to give any further information anyone requires, or answer any questions to the best of my knowledge.
Please purchase The Hare Krishna Book of Vegetarian Cooking (by, Adiraja Dasa ).. most of this information, also a beautiful picture of the Radha-Krishna deities.. which can be used on your altar.. and lots more, is in this wonderful book

I hope it helps !

Your humble servant.. Billy :)

Navasi's picture

Excellent!!!

Hare Krishna, Dear Billy,
This is all absolutely wonderful!!
Thank you so much!!!
Really really really nice... and describes everything so very well!

I would like to also add then when you are cooking you should not smell the preparations either, nor should you think at all about how they are going to taste when they are done, even after they are offered. At this point, they are only for Krishna, and you are just an instrument in the preparation of them, no thought at all, or participation in any form of "enjoying" or "experiencing" the food itself at this stage.

Also, when you are making the offering, the first prayer should be to the Spiritual Master, since as you said, we are offering it first to Him, and then He offers it to Krishna.

nama om visnu-padaya krsna-presthaya bhutale
srimate bhaktivedanta swami iti namine
namaste sarasvate devam garua-vani-pracarine
nirvisesa-sunyavadi-pascatya-desa-tarine

That's the main prayer to Srila Prabhupad, then the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra after that.

Thank you again, Billy this is all really wonderful!
Love,
Navasi

Thanking You

Hare Krishna dear Navasi.

Thank you for your very kind support !
.. also for this helpful information you have added.. which some of is new to me.
I left out the prayers.. hoping a more advanced/senior devotee would reply.. and you have done so.. Thank you again ! :)

These prayers and the Hare Krishna mantra should be repeated three times..

I have seen devotees at the temple mix all the prasada in together.. now I remember of this and why it is done.. it is for Krishna's enjoyment.

Oh... also please wash your hands ! .. before preparing anything for Krishna

Mixing Prasadam

What do you mean Billy? About the mixing of Prasadam for Krishna's enjoyment?
I don't understand what you're talking about...
Could you please explain what you mean?
You've got me really curious about this "mixing" business!! LOL!
Navasi

Billy's picture

Here is how I should have wrote it.

Hare Krishna

Please forgive my ignorance.. for not explaining in detail.

Say there is 6 different dishes of prasadam.. I have seen senior devotees then mix all the different dishes together on their plate,
before eating/honoring prasadam... so as not to have sense enjoyment of each particular dish.

The prasadam is for Krishna's enjoyment.. not ours.

Hare Krishna

Enjoying prasadam

I must admit have not heard of this before. But I know that Srila Prabhupada would encourage people to really enjoy prasadam.

I thought a little strange at first..

Hare Krishna

.. until the meaning of it was explained to me... yes, by all means enjoy prasada !
Though apparently one is not supposed to enjoy with the material sense of taste .. completely..as only Krishna is to completly enjoy ?... even in the Melbourne temple when being served prasada, the different dishes are often served on top of each other, and is not unusual to see devotees mix the different dishes together before eating..so as to not to have 100% of the material sense of taste.

Though when next at the Temple, I intend to ask once again the meaning of this.. to be sure..to be sure :)

abrennan's picture

There's no doubt you are on the right track

But I would prefer (myself) not to be so severe

Here is a quote from Sri Caitanya Caritamrita Madhya Lila 3:64 (purport) "Actually all kinds of prasadam are prepared for Krishna, not for the people, but the devotees partake of prasadam with great pleasure."

So it's true we should prepare it for Krishna's pleasure but I think we should eat it for his pleasure too.

I think you are probably right about what the devotees you have met are doing we should not be a slave to desires of the tongue or any of the other senses.

LOL! : )

I would prefer (myself) not to be so severe also!!!
LOL! : )
(I am laughing hysterically right now) (really) : )

Billy, now I know what you mean, and yes, a lot of times devotees will do this for the reasons you stated.... what a nice understanding of the transcendental nature of Prasadam that is.
I thought you were saying that it was mixed Before Offering it, and that made no sense at all to me...
Thanks for explaining.
I think as far as 'should you mix' or 'should you not mix'... it would depend on what way you are best able to Honor prasadam. (Honor being the key word).

I am going to Honor Prasadam with Antony prabhu, because I prefer the less severe way also..... : )

Love,
Navasi

Navasi's picture

Antony?

I would just like to say that I'm sorry for laughing at what you said here, it was just the way that you phrased it...
"I prefer (myself) not to be so severe"
sounded so funny to me...
(and I tend to laugh a lot about all kinds of things, and that just seemed hysterical the way you said it)
I am sorry if I offended you in any way, I would never do that intentionally....
Love,
Navasi

abrennan's picture

Well actually

Seeing as I am trying to be funny I was happy that you were laughing because no-one laughs at all those other jokes I tell here in Connect everybody thinks I'm being serious. : ) Anyway now you're not laughing I'll have to try and think of something else to lighten things up.

Thank you

Hare Krishna

Thanks for helping me with this.. it is one of the many first experiences which I had on first visit to a Temple... wondered why some did and some did not.. though seems like only those with Brahmana initiation mostly did this... as I have cooked commercially for many years, presentation is also the key ( apart from taste ).. and often wondered of the day when I may have to mix all my prasada in together.... hmmm.. now wonder if presentation.. the senses of the eyes.. looking at the preparation may also have something to do with them mixing the different dishes together also.
I think I read about this subject in The Nectar of Devotion somewhere ?

So.. now I can go back to the food channel and drool over Kurma's recepies :) :)

prayers for offering food.

Hare Krishna

These are the prayers that the devotees use...

1. Acknowledging that it is through the mercy of the spiritual master and Lord Chaitanya that Krishna accepts our offering, every devotee recites three times ( the prayer already listed in this section ) which is called pranam/Guru mantra.. to Srila Prabupada
( though after initiation, you will be given another pranam mantra also...to use for your own spiritual master )

The following two prayers are then also recited three times.. in glorification of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Lord Krishna...

2. namo-maha vadanyaya krishna-prema-pradaya te
krishnaya krishna chaitanya-namne gaura-tivise namah

" O most munificient incarnation ! You are Krishna Himself appearing as Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
You have assumed the golden colour of Srimati Radharani, and You are widely distributing pure love of Krishna.
We offer our respectful obeisances unto You. "

3. namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca
jagat-hitaya krishnaya govindaya namo namah

" I offer my respectful obeisances to the Supreme Absolute Truth, Krishna, Who is the well-wisher of cows and the brahamanas as well as the living entities in general.
I offer my repeated obeisances to Govinda, Who is the pleasure reservoir for all the senses. "

Basic Offerings

A note for anyone who might be getting overwhelmed by all this information:
With any basic offering, one would generally only use the prayers to the Spiritual Master, and then the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra.
(unless you are involved in more elaborate forms of worship, such as with Deities, and then there are all sorts of prayers, and things that must be done).
So, the Prayers to the Spiritual Master, then the Maha Mantra.
That's for a basic offering of food to be accepted by Krishna.
The simple version.
If someone wants to do more, then they should spend some time studying about Deity worship, it's very involved.
Hare Krishna.
Navasi

Billy's picture

Overwhelmed ?

Hare Krishna

Please do not be overwhelmed.. it is definately not my intention.
It is very simple !
Before a picture of the Spiritual Master and a picture of Radha-Krishna Deities..please recite these prayers...

nama om visnu-padaya
krsna-presthaya bhu-tale
srimate bhaktivedanta-
svamin iti namine

namas te sarasvate deve
gaura-vani-pracarine
nirvisesa-sunyavadi

( 3 times )

for those who are new to the Krishna way of life.. and do not live near a temple or able to associate regular with devotees,
offering food to Krishna is how to progress on your spiritual path, also to develop love of Krishna.

These prayers are important in offering food to Krishna
.. and need not be complex.. it is quite easy.

My sources for here...
1. Temple Song Book. ( page 38.. offering food. )
2. The Hare Krishna Book of Vegetarian Cooking. ( page 43. )

Hare Krishna.

Billy.

Navasi's picture

Clarity

Yes, that's a lot more clear now, thank you, Billy.
There's nothing like Clarity and Simplicity.
Do you know how to offer water?
That's really simple...
Just say "Sri Vishu" three times.... (before you drink it).
And, if you're in a really difficult situation, as so many people here are, and they eat vegetarian food with their families at the dinner table, that they do not themselves prepare, etc...
And, their families do not approve of them worshiping Krishna, then they can silently bow their heads and say the Maha Mantra!
Krishna wants the effort, the thoughts, the devotions, not the exact right prayers!!!
It's important to remember that not all of us can be preparing and offering our food in the Best Way, and we can't leave those people thinking that they should not Even Bother to try to offer their food, if they are Unable to say:
This,
This
And Also This,
Three Times Each,
And in the Proper Order,
ETC...
Thank you!
The clarification is very nice for those who are fortunate enough to be in a situation where they can do those things and say those prayers....
Love,
Navasi

Very Helpful!

Thank you, Billy,
This is very nice the way you've described what you do and how... thank you.
Hopefully some other devotees will also share what they do... so we can get more input about this....
That's interesting what you're saying about Prabhupad because I was really wondering how that works for people who have not yet taken initiation....
Thank you,

how that works ?..

Hare Krishna

not sure of what is how that works... though it seems to for me and I can see no other alternative.

Although I am not yet initiated.. but hope to be in the coming year...
I have spent some time in Krishna's temples and am familiar of worship to dear prabupad, prabhupad jaya, jaya pabhupad.

also...

.... nama om visnu-padaya

srimate bhaktivedanta-
svamin iti namine

I offer my respectful obeisances unto His divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who is very dear to Lord Krsna, having taken shelter at His lotus feet.

namas te sarasvate deve

Our respectful obeisances are unto you, O spiritual master, servant of Sarasvati Gosvami. You are kindly preaching the message of Lord Caitanyadeva and delivering the western countries, which are filled with impersonalism and voidism.
.............................................................................................

By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the benediction of Krsna.
Without the grace of the spiritual master, one cannot make any advancement. Therefore, I should always remember and praise the spiritual master. At least three times a day I should offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master.

It is difficult for us who have not had the opportunity for initiation... so the only way I can see to make advancement.. is to get on your knees at least three times per day and offer respects to dear Srila Prabhupada ....

I hope it helps a little for all the aspiring devotees.
